Annual 2006 - ALA Membership Committee I
ALA Membership Committee I
6/24/2006 10:30 AM — 12:00 PM
Morial Convention Center Rm. 290
Discussion of Dues Tied to Salary
Guests: Denise Davis (ORS), Keith Michael Fiels (ALA ED), Jim Rettig (ALA Exex Board), Patty Wong (BARC)
The wording of the Council resolution for the Dues Tied to Salary Study is confusing, but seems to say the Membership Committee will study what data is needed for the study, make recommendations and make a foral proposal.
We came up with the following data points in the commitee meeting:
- Cost of Living adjustments
- Participation rates
- Geographic location
- Job classification
- Dues paid by employers
- Retirements (and related projections) auto-indexing to [inflation/COLA?]
- Types of library employment
- Gather dues structure info from other industry associations (Social Work & Education came to mind) and state library associations (Illinois, and others)
Denise shared some resources that might help [links forthcoming at some point]:
10 year staffing study
Retirement Studies (3)
ALISE Graduations Data
Salary Tables
Will Stuivenga, Dora Ho, and Aaron Dobbs will work on a Membership Committee/BARC joint task force to study feasibility study concerning graduated dues
Library Schools are seen as a good place for membership development; ALA staff is considering a 1st year ALA experience program to encourage soon to be and new librarian involvement
