Annual 2006 - ALA Membership Committee II

Filed under: ALA — AaronTheLibrarian @ 3:38 am

At the second meeting we covered:

  • Interns Subcommittee
  • Dues Structure for types and categories
    • Organizational Membership
    • Corporate Membership
  • Public Awareness / Campaign for America’s Libraries
  • Membership Promotion Task Force Open Floor

The Interns Subcommittee has been active and organized several Interns focussed events including a casual social (at Ragin’ Cajun) which was moderately well attended (~12 Interns out of ~40?) and a Poster Session highlighting the ALA Committee Intern experience was held in the Morial Convention Center.

Organizational and Corporate Memberhsip were evaluated and discussed with an eye toward determining what incentives for non-individual members would best fit. No concrete conclusions reached, several routes to explore were suggested.

Membership Promotion Open Floor had one or two speakers from Round Tables and Divisions - main gist I got was some feel the focus on the dues increase was too marketing and top driven and some R/Ts & Divs had also just raised dues so ther emay be a bite felt in renewals the next few years.

The Membership Committee/BARC joint task force (see Annual 2006 — ALA Membership Committee I) will have it’s work cut out.

Council II comments note: A couple of councilors seemed dissatisfied at their perceived lack of progress on the graduated dues proposal Council charged the Membership Committee and BARC with studying. The overwhelming majority of councilors voted to continue the process as outlined at Annual 2005 — The upshot, as I understand it, is the Membership Committe and BARC will determine what data about the ALA membership is needed (to determine how a graduated dues structure would have to be structured to work) and how much acquiring that data will cost the Association and report back that number by Midwinter or Annual 2007 (I’ve forgotten which).

Regarding the Council II note, I’m on that Membership Committee/BARC joint task force. Wish us liuck!
