Aaron, you should do more than think about how much you spend. If you are spending personal money on these events (i.e. not getting fully reimbursed), it could help you come income tax time. Some of the membership dues (to a 501(c)3 organization) can count as contribution, and the remainder could qualify as unreimbursed business expense. I'm getting ready to do my 2008 taxes, and I am counting all sorts of stuff up!

Good points Emily - I try not to think about how much of my income I *really* spend on "professional memberships" and professional activities" every year. I'm shuddering just from being this close to thinking about it - I think it's a little under 10% of my Gross annual income. (gah!) Saving the hotel charges alone is reason enough to encourage the virtualization of conferences and "committee work."

I wonder, could a presenter give a virtual presentation (maybe record it) and then take questions via Skype-in?

And some people are forced to take vacation to attend...

Over the past year I figure I'll have spent close to $4000 (of my hard-earned cash) to attend ALA. Do the math, and that's quite a lot more than the average monthly income of a newbie librarian.

You forget 5 days of hotel rooms (~$1000), airplane tickets(~$400), and feeding yourself, which, if we take Anaheim into example, is IMPOSSIBLE to do affordably.... Philly was better with the market right there
